The Atlantic Bicycle Club was
founded in 1978.In the early days the
main purpose of the club was to promote the sport and pastime of cycling in all
its facets to as many people as possible. This brought together cycling enthusiasts from all over Monmouth and
Ocean counties as well as other areas of New Jersey.
The club has seen the
development of other cycling groups in the area including touring clubs and
dedicated racing teams. We are grateful to all those local bike shops who have
helped promote the sport of cycling over the years.
Atlantic encourages our members to participate in all aspects
of the sport. Many members join strictly for the camaraderie of the Sunday club
ride and others for the chance to join our racing team.
We encourage anyone who
wishes to try racing at any level and any age.Currently our racing team, Team Atlantic, has members ranging in age
from 13 years to 72 years.Junior racers
are strongly encouraged and we support them with entry fees and racing uniforms
as well as coaching and help with equipment when possible.
Our membership is made up of
men and women of all age groups and abilities from Monmouth and OceanCounties.Current
membership numbers around 75. Club uniforms are available for all members.
Club rides are held every
week throughout the year, Sunday and Saturday from AllenwoodSchool in WallTownship.Rides start
at 9am in the winter and 8am
in the summer.Training rides for all
ages and abilities are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from Spring through
Fall.
Currently we have no club
sponsors, club dues make up most of our funds. We hope to realize a small profit from our race promotion.
We have a long history of
bike race promotion in the area. The
Tour of Red Bank Criterium was one of our biggest successes. The race ran from
1980 to 1988 and drew competitors of the highest caliber including world and Olympic
champions.Currently we promote The Tour
of Colts Neck Road Race in partnership with the Colts Neck Department of
Recreation.2007 was our 10th
year as sponsors of this popular event.
For sport or pleasure nothing
beats cycling; age is no barrier- ride for life.
